O Christmas Tree...

December 3rd, 2020

Tis the season of Christmas decorating. Whenever this time of year comes around the same debate pops up in the eco-living community...

If you are unsure what kind to tree to get, both sides of the discussion are listed below :

Benefits of fake Christmas trees

- Cost effective, they will save you money over time.

- Fake trees can be reused for up to 10 years

- More convenient, no pine needle mess and need to water

Disadvantages of fake Christmas trees

- They are made from a plastic that is pretty much impossible to recycle so even if you use the same tree all your life it will still sit in landfill for thousands of years

-85% of Christmas trees are shipped over from China releasing high carbon emissions

Benefits of a real Christmas Tree

- Real trees have a lower carbon footprint than plastic made trees even if they are purchased from Europe on industrial scale

- If you purchase your Christmas tree locally you are supporting the community directly around you. The BCTGA website explains where you can find your local Christmas tree farm.

- By purchasing from tree farms you are supporting reforestation and upkeep of forests. One acre of Christmas trees produces enough oxygen for 18 people every day.

- Real trees are fully biodegradable. And a top tip : When disposing of your tree, if you have the means, using your tree as firewood reduces its carbon footprint by 80%

Disadvantages of fake Christmas trees

- Live trees can carry pollen and mold which could set of allergies in you or your pets

- It can be a pricey purchase to make, at an already expensive time of year.

Top Tip : Local charities often run ‘tree cycle’ schemes to raise money. They will collect your tree, woodchip it and use it for gardening, compost etc. A local one to our office is run by Mary Stevens Hospice.

ALL WE WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS...SUSTAINABILITY

November 20th, 2020

Ways to shop more sustainably this Christmas season :

With Black Friday coming up it can be easy to get excited about crazy deals and forget all the reasons smaller and independent businesses are better for our world.

ZERO WASTE GIFT WRAPPING

100,000 tonnes of plastic packaging gets binned on Christmas Day. If you have purchased in a sustainable way you may as well wrap your presents in a way the planet will love. Did you know a lot of wrapping paper contains plastic and therefore is not recyclable? The easiest way to check this is called the scrunch method. Squeeze wrapping paper into ball, if it stays scrunched then it’s probably recyclable.

Lockdown Take Two

November 20th, 2020

STAYING  SAFE  IN  THIS  PANDEMIC

Heading back into the UKs second lockdown may seem daunting and uncertain. We hope you are looking after yourselves and staying safe.

On Monday we held a team meeting where we discussed how we were going to navigate this month. The decision we arrived at was to keep going. Our factory has all the restrictions in place from the first lockdown and we are much more prepared than last time. Because of this we are proud to say we will be able to stay open to support you and your cleaning habits throughout this month. We got through the last one, we can get through a second !!

No expectations

No one could have predicted what has happened so far this year so let’s make peace with however and whatever we spend this second lockdown doing. There is no pressure to spend this time learning a new language, creating Michelin star worthy meals and productivity 25/8. There isn’t a ‘right’ way to be spending your time.

Check In

As the mornings and evenings are darker this lockdown will be tougher. Remember to check in with your loved ones, keep in contact and remind each other this won't last forever. For those struggling Shout is the UKs first free 24/7 text service. If you need immediate help text : 85258.

Love your environment

We are in a pandemic, cleaning is essential. Not just our hands but our homes as well. Our Antibacterial household cleaners contain an agent that is proven to kill germs.

Not only does a clean home keep us safe right now, but its also good for your soul. If we are spending more time at home, we may as well make our environment a pleasant one to be in.
