Why is picking an eco-friendly Halloween outfit important?
90% of UK families who dress up for Halloween buy a new costumes each year. This means approximately 7 million Halloween costumes are thrown away each year. Which equals over 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste, that is equivalent to the weight of 10 blue whales! Our tips mean you can dress to kill without killing the planet. Get scary, guilt free.
Be part of the 14%
Only 14% of people make their Halloween costumes. Making costumes doesn’t just have to be for creative people. There are so many easy costumes that require minimal effort.
A classic example of this is a ghost costume. We all have a spare, old white sheet or pillow case somewhere in the house. All you need is a pair of scissors and you have a ghost. Pop an old hat on to secure the sheet in place and you are ready for a night of spooking.
As always, making your own costume is far cheaper than buying from a supermarket, amazon or a fancy dress up shop.
Face paint
For the slightly more creative of you a set of face paints could be your best friend. From cute pumpkins and day of the dead floral looks, to skulls or creepy clowns the characters you can create are endless. You can make the look as simple or as complex as you want. The best part? Wash off the face paint at the end of the night and your outfit was completely waste free!
Use clothes you have
Not all costumes have to be scary. Thanks to american culture lots of people are dressing as their favourite characters from movies, tv and books for Halloween. It’s so easy to make these type of outfits from clothes you already have in your home. So grab a tiara and some headphones for Princess Mia or curl your hair, pop on a school tie and grab a twig/wand to be Hermione.
Borrow from a friend
Of course you probably don’t want to wear the same costume you wore last year, so why not swap with a friend? Not only does it feel like a new outfit but it’s getting another use out of a costume that might have just sat in the dress up draw.
Rent a Halloween costume
If you want to go all out and making your own, or popping some face paint just won’t cut it. Why don’t you consider renting an outfit? This way you can look fabulous without the planet paying the price for an outfit you’ll only wear once.
