I scream, you scream, we all scream for sustainable sunscreen

Summer holidays are here ☀️

Schools have broken up for summer! Even if you don’t have family at school or work in education yourself, that holiday feeling is in the air. Whether you are going on a pandemic holiday, road tripping for a #staycation or making the most of the sun in your garden, lets talk sustainable sunscreen.

Our reefs are dying

Majority of sunscreens contain chemicals that are incredibly damaging to marine life. The biggest link is related to coral reef damage and bleaching. In 2018 Hawaii was the first country to ban these sunscreens.

Whilst this summer it’s unlikely we will be swimming near the coral reef (cheers corona) sunscreen washes into the waterways and oceans when we shower. 14,000 tons of sunscreen are thought to wash into the oceans each year.

The main thing to do when buying sunscreen this summer is check its oxybenzone and octinoxate free. The ocean will thank you.

Some reef safe sunscreens :

All Natural Sunscreen – Made in the UK, 100% natural ingredients, SPF 25

Earth Mama – Safe for children and sensitive skin. No chemicals that will harm the planet or people on it.

Nivea – Not the most sustainable but definitely the most accessible option. Reef friendly and free from the nastiest chemicals. Packaged in 95% recycled plastic.

We hope you enjoy the sunny weather and holidays if you are going on them.
